US President Donald Trump has yet again conveyed his desire to run for a third term on Thursday while addressing a crowded room for a Black History Month where he asked, "should I run again? You tell me."

Trump assumed office for his second term in January 2025 and despite the US Constitution banning an individual to run presidential elections for the third time, the Repulican President and his supporters have frequently joked about the possibility of a third term for him.

This time Trump made the remark during an official White House event at the East Room in the presence of mostly Black supporters. This remark comes at a time when there is growing concern of him trying to use his presidential powers beyond the limits of the Constitution.

On Thursday, Republicans Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina and Republican John James of Michigan were present when Trump made the remark along with other political appointees and athletes like famed golfer Tiger Woods who all reportedly responded with chants of - "Four more years!"

This is not the first time Trump said so, back in January during the House Republican retreat in Florida, he 'jokingly' said, “Am I allowed to run again?”, reported Associated Press. 

Just a week after winning the election last fall, Trump hinted in a meeting with House Republicans that he might want to remain in office even after his second term ends.

Trump reportedly said, "I suspect I won’t be running again unless you say, ‘He’s so good we got to figure something else out," in an attempt to make the lawmakers laugh.

What Does US Constitution Say?

US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected four times in a row till 1944 but later the US Constitution adopted its 22nd Amendment that says, "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice."

The Constitution highlights the ban on an individual serving more than two terms pretty clearly.

Reportedly, Congressman Andy Ogles earlier this year introduced a House Joint Resolution to amend the Constitution of the United States to allow a President to be elected for up to but no more than three terms.

According to Associated Press report, some Trump supporters have argued that the language in the US Constitution is meant to apply only to two consecutive terms because Roosevelt’s terms were consecutive, but notably that’s not what the amendment says.

Reaction

Trump's former adviser, Steve Bannon, expressed similar thoughts at the Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) gathering.

Bannon stated, “The future of MAGA is Donald Trump,” as he continued to say, “We want Trump in '28. That’s what they can't stand. A man like Trump only comes along once or twice in the country’s history. We want Trump!”
